AD + GRAPH Faculty biographies

 

Richard Aschenbrand, dean of visual communications, teaches advanced typography and type design, packaging design, portfolio, advertising design, and exhibition design. He is a freelance graphic and package designer and regularly appears as a guest lecturer at area workshops, and often serves as a juror/director at arts festivals and exhibits. Mr. Aschenbrand received a graduate fellowship from Pratt Institute where he studied graphic and packaging design. He received a BFA and MS degree from Pratt Institute.

David Bennett, visual communications assistant professor, teaches Web design, pre-press production, and various computer design technique classes. He holds a BSID in visual communication design from The Ohio State University and an MS in graphic arts publishing from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He has worked in many aspects of the graphic design industry, including designer, computer graphics director, and pre-press technician. He also consults on Web and print graphic projects.

Larry Bode, visual communications professor, teaches typography, advertising design, and advanced color. His freelance work has won awards from a number of professional organizations, including the Columbus Society of Communicating Arts. He has BFA degrees from CCAD in both advertising design and illustration.

Steve Botts, visual communications instructor, teaches application-based computer courses. He graduated with a BFA in Illustration from CCAD in 1970 and has been a successful freelance illustrator for more than 30 years. His client list includes Bank One, Ross Labs, 20th Century Fox, Ohio Historical Society, Warner Communications, Zaner-Bloser, and numerous other educational publishers. He currently illustrates art programs for high-priority college textbooks focusing on education and technology.

Mark A. Burleigh, visual communications assistant professorr, is a freelance graphic designer with an agency background as senior art director and as a packaging graphics designer. He has received honors from a variety of professional organizations that include the Clio Awards and The Canton Advertising Club’s Addy Competition. He currently has works on exhibit with the Detroit Historical Museum, Ohio University, and The Ohio Department of Natural Resources. He recieved a BFA from CCAD.

Lori Faist, visual communications assistant professor, is the chair of the electronic publishing department. She teaches electronic publishing techniques courses, which focus on the implementation of designs on the computer using Adobe Photoshopand Illustrator, QuarkXPress, and Macromedia FreeHand. Ms. Faist co-authored two books for Macromedia Inc. on FreeHand, which were published in 1997 and 1998. She has freelanced as a corporate trainer for various Columbus companies including CompuServe, Nationwide, and Victoria’s Secret. She also worked as an electrical design engineer for ITT Aerospace on the GOES weather satellite for NASA. She has a BS in electrical engineering from The Ohio State University.

Vicki Golden, visual communications instructor, teaches courses in electronic publishing and electronic publishing techniques, which includes Macromedia FreeHand, QuarkXpress, and Adobe Photoshop combined together to create publication pieces. Before graduating from CCAD with a BFA, cum laude, in illustration and a minor in advertising, Ms. Golden worked for the U.S. Air Force Europe in marketing and publicity. After graduating she worked in wholesale and retail product development and advertising. Currently working full time in electronic publishing, she also maintains a freelance clientele for graphics, illustration, and computer training. Her client list consists of Mid American Financial, Zaner-Bloser, Licking Heights Local School District, and numerous nonprofit organizations to which she donates her time and work.

James Hazelett, visual communications adjunct instructor, teaches electronic illustration. He is currently working full-time for Learning Design Associates where he is the manager of the Digital Services department. Mr. Hazelett also freelances as a graphic designer and creates three-dimensional illustrations as a hobby. He received his BFA from CCAD in advertising design.

Mark Hazlerig, visual communications professor, teaches three-dimensional illustration, history of American illustration, and package design. Mr. Hazlerig is also the director of CCAD’s dimensional illustration and package design laboratory. He maintains an active freelance practice and is the owner of F/X Illustration. His clients include Patton Museum, A.D. Farrow Harley-Davidson Museum, Ohio Department of Mental Health and Retardation, the US Department of Defense, Battelle Memorial Institute, General Electric, Sears, and Wendy’s International. Mr. Hazlerig served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and obtained the rank of Sergeant. He attended the University of Kentucky and earned BFA degrees, cum laude, in both advertising design and illustration from CCAD.

Sanford Meisel, visual communications adjunct instructor, teaches publishing and publication design. He holds a BFA in visual communication from The Ohio State University where he has taught courses in professional practice, portfolio, and introduction to design. Mr. Meisel was design director and associate publisher of Columbus Monthly magazine prior to founding Meisel Design Office Inc., a communication design practice. Clients have included Honda of America Mfg., Bank One, The Limited, Nationwide Communications Inc., and The Ohio State University. Mr. Meisel is currently creative director of Paul Werth Associates and is a past president of the Columbus Society of Communicating Arts.

Randy Wax, visual communications adjunct instructor, received a BFA in advertising design from CCAD. His work has earned numerous awards from organizations including Ohio Designs the Arts and the Columbus Society of Communicating Arts, and has been used in promotional materials for the Strathmore Paper Company. Mr. Wax has worked as an art director at the National Center for Vocational Education at The Ohio State University, WDHO-TV, Toledo, Michi Designs Inc., and was a partner in the design studio, communiGraphics. He founded Wax Design Associates, a company he operated until selling it in 1998. He is currently director of marketing at King Thompson, Realtor, Columbus.

Clay White, visual communications adjunct instructor, teaches courses in Photoshop and advanced creative imaging. He has been a commercial photographer for 30 years and has been involved with the development and teaching of electronic-imaging technologies since their inception. He enjoys a national reputation in this field through various speaking engagements and his studio’s digital and conventional work. Mr. White received his AAS in electronics from DeVry Institute of Technology and a BS in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology.
